Our first graders have really enjoyed our Science unit on Space! They were really excited about observing the moon and discovering that the sun actually doesn’t “go up and down”, it stays still while the Earth rotates around it.
With our Earth experiments freshly in mind, we can guarantee that they will be equally as excited about our upcoming CKLA Knowledge unit, which is also about the Earth, the Sun, and Space.
In CKLA Skills, we’ve been learning about many vowel digraphs, such as the sounds /oo/, /ou/, /oi/, /aw/, and most recently, the r-controlled vowels /ar/, /er/, and /or/. We are using these sounds to be able to decode more words, read stories fluently, and build our comprehension skills. We’re focusing on being able to answer comprehension questions in complete sentences and restating the question. We are working hard to get everyone to not begin their sentences with “because”.
In Eureka Math, we have just wrapped up Module 2. We’ve been working on strategies to add and subtract teen numbers. These strategies are a way to build mental math fluency with teen numbers. In Module 3, we will be working on measurement.
We are moving from Science to Social Studies skills for the remainder of this 9 weeks through the start of the third 9 weeks. We have been learning about maps, land forms and bodies of water. Once we return, we will learn more about laws, leaders, and responsibilities.
