Hello First Grade Family!
We’ve started this school ready for 1st grade and there’s lots to learn!
In our Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) Skills curriculum, we’re starting with a review of all of the sounds and tricky words that we’ve learned in Kindergarten. We want to make sure that our students are masters reading, so we review these foundational skills before moving on to more complex sounds and words. We’re also reading decodable stories and answering comprehension questions in complete sentences.
We’ve already covered so much in our CKLA Knowledge curriculum! The first few weeks of school, we’ve listened to many fables and determined the morals that they teach. We’ve just recently completed our second unit, which taught us all about our body systems, ways to stay healthy, and the food pyramid. Continuing comprehension skills include using Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then, to help us retell important parts of a story.
In our Eureka Math curriculum, we’ve been spending a lot of time becoming more fluent in solving basic math facts, solving word problems with multiple steps, and finding equal expressions. We’ve also learned many strategies to help us solve these equations and word problems.
We’ve been alternating Science and Social Studies Skills. The past three weeks we’ve had a wonderful time investigating sound and light through hands-on experiments. In Social Studies, we’ve earned about responsibilities, navigating maps using a compass rose, and what it means to be kind.
First graders are looking forward to our first field trip this year. We will be attending Stella Plantation’s Fall Fest. Just a reminder, money and field trip forms are due by Friday, September 28th by 9:00 am! We are also looking forward to C.T. Janet’s annual Fall Fest here at school. Join us on Tuesday, October 30th from 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Families and younger siblings are welcomed and encouraged to attend this great family event!
Thank you to all our first grade parents that took some time to come spend-a-day with us! We hope that you enjoyed your experience as a first grader for a day!
